Summary

Join the Apple Cloud Object Store (ACOS) team as a Software Engineer building one of the most critical infrastructure platforms at Apple. ACOS stores and serves exabytes of data across Apple's services, and is part of the Apple Services Engineering (ASE) organisation, which brings together compute, storage, networking, and security into a unified Apple Cloud platform. In this role you'll tackle deep distributed systems challenges (durability, availability, performance, multi-tenancy) while also owning the authentication, authorisation, and encryption foundations that protect data at massive scale.

Description

Building a cloud object store that handles hundreds of thousands of requests per second creates a wide range of engineering problems. You'll work across the full spectrum: designing systems for durability and availability across regions; building for high-throughput performance under strict latency requirements; evolving multi-tenant isolation and resource management; and strengthening the security foundations (authentication, authorisation, encryption-at-rest) that underpin everything. This is a role for someone who enjoys working across the stack, is energised by large-scale infrastructure challenges, and wants to develop deep expertise in security engineering as part of a broader systems skill set.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate core storage infrastructure serving exabytes of data across Apple's services, with a focus on durability, availability, and performance.

Identify, scope, and lead projects that span reliability, scalability, isolation, security, and maintainability. This is a broad infrastructure engineering role with real ownership and impact.

Own and contribute to security infrastructure across authentication, authorisation, and encryption, building platforms that the rest of the storage organisation depends on.

Implement and evolve authentication and authorisation systems: improving credential security, integrating with Apple services, and ensuring consistent access control across storage products.

Build and maintain encryption-at-rest infrastructure, including key lifecycle management and ensuring cryptographic coverage at scale.

Participate in threat modeling and security design reviews for new and existing features, embedding security thinking into everyday engineering.

Work across teams to identify improvement areas, build consensus, and contribute to roadmap planning. Collaborate with Apple's Security and Privacy organisations as a point of contact for storage security matters.

Join a highly collaborative team that values mutual support, continuous learning, and career growth.

Minimum Qualifications

Strong backend software engineering experience with solid computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, networking, and distributed systems.

Experience designing or operating large-scale, high-availability systems.

Experience driving complex, cross-team projects end-to-end.

Familiarity with security concepts such as authentication, authorisation, or encryption.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience building or operating large-scale storage, data infrastructure, or cloud platforms.

Experience with high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems.

Hands-on experience with authentication or authorisation systems (e.g., OAuth2, mTLS, IAM-style policy systems, STS/short-lived credentials).

Exposure to encryption infrastructure: key management, envelope encryption, or integration with secret management systems (e.g., HashiCorp Vault, AWS KMS, or equivalent).

Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as PCI-DSS or SOX in a cloud infrastructure context.

Experience with threat modeling or security design reviews.
