Staff Distributed Systems Engineer | Infrastructure & Platform

Remote | London, NY or Toronto

$250k–$325k + Equity

This role is at a fast growing MediaTech AI software company who need an elite calibre Senior infrastructure engineer to build the backend systems that power persistent customer runtime environments at scale. This is a backend-first platform role for someone who writes production code, owns infrastructure through software, and enjoys solving hard problems across containers, cloud, observability, reliability and distributed systems.

This is not a pure DevOps or SRE role, this is a elite level strong software engineer with real infrastructure depth, ideally from a startup or scale-up where ownership was end to end.

The ideal candidate is a backend-first infrastructure engineer who thrives in high-intensity startup or scale-up environments. You are likely an AI-native or AI-forward professional with a deep background in infrastructure-heavy domains such as developer tooling, martech/adtech, or complex workflow software.

In this role, your focus will be roughly 60% backend and 40% infrastructure. We are looking for engineers who have written production application code that directly controls infrastructure—including VMs, containers, queues, async workloads, and orchestration—or managed persistent runtime environments at scale. You should have experience handling core infrastructure in environments where each customer requires isolated or dedicated workloads.

Beyond technical depth, you demonstrate strong ownership, excellent communication skills, and a clear track record of shipping end-to-end solutions. Bonus signals include experience as a founder or founding engineer, exposure to AI product development, and hands-on expertise with cloud platforms, containers, observability, Linux, and infrastructure-as-code.

Role requirements

Strong backend engineering background with meaningful infrastructure ownership.

Experience writing production application code that controls infrastructure, runtime systems, containers or async workloads.

Hands-on experience with cloud environments and containerised platforms.

Strong understanding of Docker, Kubernetes and infrastructure-as-code tooling.

Comfortable working in Linux-heavy production environments.

Experience with observability, debugging, reliability and distributed system behaviour.

Able to build abstractions and platform capabilities, not just deliver isolated tickets.

Startup or scale-up experience with clear end-to-end ownership.

Strong communication skills and good technical judgement.

Genuine interest in AI-enabled products and modern platform engineering.

Core deliverables

Build and own the application layer that manages customer-specific cloud runtime environments.

Design systems for lifecycle management, orchestration, async processing and service coordination.

Improve reliability, scalability and observability across core platform infrastructure.

Create reusable abstractions around queues, locks, background jobs and runtime behaviour.

Help define clean infrastructure and platform engineering standards for the wider team.

Work across containers, networking, storage, permissions and production debugging.

Partner closely with engineers and product teams to support fast, reliable product delivery.

Contribute to a high-ownership engineering culture where platform decisions have direct customer impact.
